The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project is meant to improve patient care and address the significant increase in patient volumes by introducing advanced medical technologies, replacing
aged buildings, and increasing hospital capacity by 50 percent. Phase 2 of this project involves a number of construction, demolition, and renovation work with a focus on building a new Acute Care Tower and demolition of
several existing facilities. NorLand was engaged by EllisDon to perform the following scopes of work:
- Demolition of the Sherbrooke Centre.
- Site servicing of the new buildings.
- Construction of over 6,000 square meters of loading bays and parking area including retaining walls.
- To allow for EllisDon’s phased construction of the project, excavation for the new Acute Care Tower occurred while demolition and civil works were ongoing. The excavation work entailed moving 180,00 cubic yards of soil along with over 54,000 square feet of shoring.
- Seismic upgrade of the existing mechanical room by installing micropiles and enlarging footings inside an active facility.
